Cyclist dies in bridge collision

Scene of the crash on the Itchen Bridge

A cyclist was killed and another seriously injured when they were involved in a collision with a car on a bridge in a Hampshire city.

The 60-year-old male victim, from Swanwick, died at the scene on the Itchen Bridge in Southampton just before 2100 BST on Wednesday.

The other cyclist, a 32-year-old man, from Whiteley, was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

All the occupants of the car, a Peugeot 406, were arrested.

Police would not say how many people were involved, but they are being held at police stations across the county.

It was understood the victims had been cycling in a group of four at the time of the crash.

The bridge was closed for six hours while officers examined the scene of the crash.

Any witnesses have been urged to contact police.
