Suspect package closes main road

Scene of incident on A27 Motorists faced five-mile tailbacks on a main route through Hampshire after a suspect package was found at the side of the road.

Specialist bomb disposal officers were called to the A27 near Havant where they carried out a controlled explosion in the morning.

The A27 was closed for several hours in both directions between Langstone and the junction with the A3.

Police were not linking the incident with recent letter bomb attacks.

The suspect package was reported at 0758 GMT near a bridge over the A27 carriageway.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area as Hulbert Road and Petersfield Road, in Havant, were also closed.
