Stabbed man could be paralysed

Detectives are stepping up their hunt for those responsible for stabbing a man who may have been left paralysed from the waist down for life.

The man, who has lived in Southampton for about three years, was attacked in St Mary's Road on 31 December.

When the 29-year-old was stabbed in the back, the blade of the knife remained embedded in his spine, police said.

Detectives have now renewed their appeal for witnesses to the "vicious attack" which happened about 0250 GMT.

"He (the victim)will need months of rehabilitation until the full extent of his injuries are known"
Det Insp Chris Fitchet

Det Insp Chris Fitchet, of Hampshire Police, said: "This was a vicious attack which is likely to leave the victim permanently paralysed.

"He has undergone surgery at Southampton General Hospital and is currently in a stable condition, but he will need months of rehabilitation until the full extent of his injuries are known.

"The attack happened outside the Unity 101 radio station, and we would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack, if they saw or heard anything.

"We think a number of people were walking or driving in the area at the time."

Police believe two men were involved in the attack and "at least one of them had brown skin and dark hair".

A police spokesman said because of the severity of the victim's injuries, officers were still working with him to get a full picture of what happened.
