Girl shot with airgun at school

A nine-year-old girl is recovering after being shot in the leg with an air pistol as she left to go home from a Forest of Dean primary school.

The gun was fired by another pupil at Berry Hill Primary on Tuesday.

"The injured child was treated immediately by a first aider at the school and then went home," said head teacher Gail Jones.

Parents have been informed and the child who allegedly inflicted the injury has been excluded, she added.

Very shocked

The girl did not need further treatment, Ms Jones said.

Police said they were called to Berry Hill Primary School on Tuesday morning after an incident "involving two pupils and the discharge of an air weapon".

A weapon was recovered, but the incident has now been handed to social services because of the age of the children involved, a spokeswoman said.

The girl not thought to be seriously hurt, but was very shocked.

"Police will always treat incidents involving weapons of any kind seriously," the police spokeswoman said.

"We are thankful the injuries sustained during this particular incident were relatively minor."
