Library users in Gloucestershire will be given the chance to try out a new software package which includes databases, spreadsheets and graphics.
Open Source has been successfully used on public access computers in the Gloucestershire Archives in a small-scale trial.
It has been installed in Newent library for use from Monday.
Visitors' views will be sought on the free software during the trial, which will last until December.
"This is a really exciting project which has the potential to save taxpayers' money and improve the computer services we offer in libraries," said Councillor Ron Allen.
"At the end of the pilot, we will take what Newent customers have told us, together with any technical issues such as support and staff training, before we decide a way forward.
"Then we will be able to see whether to roll out the project to more libraries."
