'Pop' producer tapes fail to sell

Joe Meek

Original music master tapes recorded by producer Joe Meek failed to reach their reserve price at auction in London.

Gloucestershire-born Meek, who died in 1967, was responsible for 1960s hits like Telstar by the Tornados.

Some 2,000 recordings, including work by David Bowie and Tom Jones, were for sale at the Idea Generation Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday evening.

Auctioneer Ted Owen said: "The top bid of £170,000 was well below the reserve price."

He added: "Another offer has come in, which we are considering with seller Cliff Cooper. We should know the result within 48 hrs."
