Shops closed after 'urine' attack

Two supermarkets in Gloucester remain closed after a man walked in and sprayed what is thought to be urine over meat, salad and fruit on Friday.

Police have been given another 12 hours to charge or release a 42-year-old from Gloucester arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

Tesco in Quedgeley, and Morrisons at Abbeydale remain closed for health checks and cleaning to be carried out.

Morrisons said it hoped to re-open on Sunday morning.

'Precautionary measure'

Tesco's plans for re-opening are not known at this stage.

Staff at the Tesco store are having to dispose of what is being described as a "substantial amount of stock" as it may have been contaminated.

A Tesco spokesman said as a precautionary measure anyone who was in the store between 1100 and 1135 BST on Friday and purchased goods is advised to dispose of them and bring their receipt back to the store for a full refund.

"We want to reassure customers that police and Health Protection Agency (HPA) have said there is no threat to public safety.

"Specialist contractors are in the store who will be doing a thorough clean-up operation.

The man in police custody has to be released or charged by 0030 BST on Sunday.
