Rugby to remember flood victims

Tewkesbury Rugby Football Club, 26 July 2007 The father and son who died as they were clearing flood water from a rugby clubhouse are to be remembered by a minute's silence at Twickenham.

Bramwell Lane, 64, and his son Chris Lane, 27, were found dead on Thursday morning at Tewkesbury Rugby Club.

It is thought the pair had been overcome by fumes from a petrol pump.

The Rugby Football Union will hold a minute's silence before England's World Cup warm-up match with Wales on Saturday in front of a crowd of 70,000.

'Priceless contribution'

Mr Lane and his son had worked through the night to clear the flooded clubhouse cellar so they could reopen to members.

RFU president Bob Taylor said they wanted to pay tribute to two volunteers who had dedicated much of their lives to the game.

"After such a sad loss the thoughts of everyone in our game are with the family and friends of Bram and Chris and everyone involved with Tewkesbury RFC," he said.

"The strength of the game is in the stalwarts everywhere who dedicate themselves to their clubs with such enthusiasm and it is right that we recognise their priceless contribution."

RFU community rugby chairman John Owen said: "We're all part of one rugby family and this sad event has struck a chord with everyone involved in the game throughout the country."
