Recycling rates break 50% barrier

Recycling rates in the Cotswolds have risen above 50% for the first time.

Figures for the first three months of 2007 show recycling up to 51.5%. The district council has been given a target of 70% by 2010-11.

To help achieve this the council's cabinet is to spend £25,764 on new recycling banks for the district.

Glass, cans, paper and garden waste is collected fortnightly and cardboard, plastic bottles, foil and textiles can be taken to recycling bank sites.

A council spokeswoman said a redesign of the council's waste collection service, which is set to deliver even more opportunities to recycle, is in the pipeline.

Council Leader Councillor Lynden Stowe said: "Today's good news shows that our aspiration of reaching a 70% recycling rate by 2010-11 can be achieved.

"I'd like to thank everyone who is making the effort to recycle and encourage those who aren't to make a start. We need to work together to make a difference."
