Nicholas Pearce, 21, from Chippenham, Wiltshire, was given nine points on his licence for causing the crash in which passenger Daniel Brookman, 20, died.
The pair were clearing up after the horse trials at Gatcombe Park, Gloucs, when the accident happened last August.
Mr Brookman's family said they were disappointed at Pearce's sentence.
They said they knew he would have to live with the fact that his friend had died but that they wanted him to remember that he also took away their beloved son.
Gloucester Magistrates' Court heard Pearce was driving the quad bike down a hill at the estate, near Minchinhampton, with Daniel in the passenger seat, when it overturned.
Daniel, from West Kington near Chippenham, was crushed by the machine and died later in hospital.
