Boy dies during cross-country run

A 17-year-old boy has died while taking part in a cross-country run, his school has announced.

Jack Sheriff, from Little Baddow, Essex, was pronounced dead after collapsing during a competition in Writtle, Essex.

Chris Nicholls, headteacher at Moulsham High School, said Jack was an "energetic, happy-go-lucky sort of kid".

"It has been a huge shock," he added. The cause of death is not yet known.
