Centre to test new motorbike laws

A new £1.5m multi-purpose driving centre in Essex is also designed to test new motorcycle manoeuvres which cannot be done on the open road.

The multi-purpose test centre is due to open in Basildon on 29 September when motorcycle tests change because of a new European Community Directive.

New manoeuvres are to be undertaken by riders at speeds up to 50kph (31.5mph).

For safety reasons these manoeuvres cannot be carried out on public roads but are essential for a full licence.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will cease car practical testing at the Southend centre on 5 December and this will be re-located to the new multi-purpose centre at Basildon.

DSA chief executive Rosemary Thew said: "The new motorbike test will contribute to improvements in road safety and this multi-purpose test centre fits into our overall vision of improving facilities for riders and drivers across Great Britain."
