Long fight against speeding claim

Walter Probyn was caught in London Road, Clacton, Essex, in 2004 allegedly driving at 40mph in a 30mph zone.

Mr Probyn, 75, claims the camera was faulty and shot a video which he said showed it being triggered by vehicles on the opposite side of the road.

Essex Safety Camera Partnership told the BBC that it was confident in the reliability of its equipment.

Mr Probyn's case first came to Harwich Magistrates' Court in August 2004 when it was adjourned for trial.

'Highly maintained'

Since then, he has been to court more than 20 times when the case has been adjourned and halted for legal arguments.

Mr Probyn said: "I would have paid £60 rather than go through all this if I was guilty.

"I am not fighting this over £60, I am fighting it for the principle."

The Safety Camera Partnership said: "We would never manipulate any original evidence.

"We are unable to comment on Mr Probyn's alleged offence as it is part of an ongoing court case.

"We would however like to reassure the public that all our safety camera equipment is highly maintained, installed and operated by fully trained staff."
