Wind farm application is rejected

Npower Renewables wanted to build ten turbines at Hockley Farm in Bradwell on Sea, Essex.

There were concerns over the effect on the bird population, archaeological remains near the site and interference with Southend Airport's radar systems.

If constructed the farm could have produced enough power to meet the electricity needs of up 10,600 homes

'Lights go out'

Maldon District Council refused permission because of "the considerable impact it would have on the special nature of the open and undeveloped landscape around the site, including the effect on the setting of the Chapel at St Peter's-on-the-Wall".

A spokesman for Npower told BBC News after Thursday's decision that the company was to review its position.

"This decision also doesn't reflect the numerous public opinion surveys that show that eight out of 10 people across the UK support the development of wind power," he said.

"What many people don't realise is that by 2020 around 30% of our current electricity generation will have shut down and without new sources of power generation, the lights will go out."
