Rescued surfer lucky to be alive

A surfer who was rescued from the sea off Dorset after apparently being knocked out by banging her head, is lucky to be alive police have said.

The unconscious woman, thought to be from Plymouth, was attached to her surfboard when she was rescued off Boscombe beach by RNLI lifeguards.

She was then taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in a serious condition after the incident on Friday.

The unnamed 28-year-old is due to be released from hospital later.

"Had she not been pulled out, she could have died," a police spokesman said.

"She banged her head. She is very lucky."

Mike Latto was filming a documentary about the building of Europe's first artificial surf reef off Boscombe, when he caught the rescue on camera.
