Resort gets car-free zone pilot

Part of Bournemouth town centre has been pedestrianised ahead of the town's annual gay pride celebrations this weekend.

The area, at the northern edge of the Triangle, in the town centre, will be transformed in to a public space for events and markets from Friday.

It has meant the closure of the road outside Bournemouth Library.

The move, aimed at "improving the public realm", had been welcomed by traders, the borough council said.

The pedestrianisation is part of a pilot study for the Town Centre Master Vision.

Bourne Free

The road can remain closed for up to 18 months.

It comes as the town's three-day Bourne Free event get under way on Friday, featuring live entertainment and events.

Gary Lancashire, of the Triangle Traders Association, said: "This is a good first step in making improvements to the triangle.

"We're all very pleased that something is being done and we think it will prove extremely positive for the area."

Funding of £274,600 has also been allocated for more permanent improvements at the Triangle.

Public consultation will take place throughout the summer and autumn.
