Olympic town's seafront vision

Plans to transform Weymouth's seafront in time for the 2012 Olympic Games have been put out to public consultation.

Greenhill Gardens and nearby chalets are in line for a makeover as part of the town's preparations to host the sailing events of the London games.

Previous plans were scrapped after English Heritage gave the chalets protected listed status.

The new proposal would see landscaped gardens, public spaces, a new cafe and an outdoor exhibition space.

Residents can have their say on the plans, which are on view at Weymouth Library and on the council's website.

A total of £6.6m in funding has been secured for the project from the South West Regional Development Agency.

A bid has also been made for £4m of the government's Sea-Change programme.

Councillor Alison Reed, of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said: "At the moment visitors and locals come and we have this lovely Georgian esplanade but it tends to stop at Brunswick Terrace but this will encourage people to come further into Greenhill Gardens.

"It will make it a really, beautiful public realm for everybody to enjoy."

The consultation will end on 17 January.
