Live detonator blown up on beach

A live detonator, believed to be from a quarry, has been found and blown up on a beach in Dorset.

Portland Coastguard were alerted to the device, described as "a rock with a live charge in it", on Highcliffe beach near Christchurch on Friday evening.

A coastguard spokesman said it was thought to have failed to detonate in a quarry and had been put on the beach along with other rubble by mistake.

Army bomb disposal experts were called and safely detonated the device.
