A teenager walked into the sea and drowned after rowing with his mother over his girlfriend, an inquest heard.
Dominic Maynard, 19, walked out of the family home in Bridport, Dorset, last November after his mother told his girlfriend to leave.
She was worried that her younger son Toby, who had a brief fling with the same girl, would see them together.
Dominic was last seen on CCTV walking along Bournemouth promenade. A verdict of suicide was recorded.
On the night he died, Dominic told his girlfriend she could take his Renault Clio back home to his parents, "so they will have something to remember me by".
"He said, 'thank you for being a good mum'"
His mother Penny woke up to find he had missed his midnight curfew but had left a message on her answer phone.
She told the inquest on Friday: "He said, 'I expect you don't want to hear from me', and I was really shocked.
"He said, 'thank you for being a good mum and thank Rachel and Toby for being a good brother and sister', and then he went on to thank other friends."
She had confronted her son weeks beforehand over a picture he had drawn for a project called Inside Outside which was in his bedroom.
Dominic had drawn a hanging man with the words: "One day you will find me swinging lifeless from this tree."
The teenager, who was a fan of so-called "Emo" rock music, was due to go to a concert by rock band Biffy Clyro.
Mrs Maynard added: "Emo music is all to do with death."
A post-mortem examination showed he died of drowning.
His body was too badly decomposed for tests to show whether alcohol or drugs played a part in his death, the inquest in Bournemouth heard.
