Two Marks and Spencer specialist food stores are to close in Devon, with the lost of 56 jobs as part of the firm's nationwide cost-cutting plans.
The two Simply Food stores are at Union Square, Torquay, which employs 23 staff, and Lace Walk in Honiton which has a workforce of 33.
The main out-of-town Marks and Spencer store at the Willows in Torbay will remain open.
Nationally, 25 Simply Food stores and two M&S stores will close.
M&S chairman Stuart Rose said the company had looked at every available option and opportunity to keep the Honiton and Torquay stores open, but they were no longer commercially viable.
Talks planned
The leader of East Devon District Council is to organise a meeting with a representative from M&S over concerns for the local economy as a result of the closure in Honiton.
Local MEP Neil Parish has also expressed concern over the closure of the Honiton store.
"This is immensely disappointing for the whole town and I would urge Marks and Spencer to reconsider this decision," he said.
"I can understand that the difficult economic situation is forcing retailers across the country to tighten their belts but Honiton is a vibrant town and one which is well placed to get through the downturn.
"If Marks and Spencer were to keep faith with the town I am sure that they would ultimately see that there is enough trade and demand for the store. It would be most disappointing if they left."
