Scooter rider dies in road crash

A scooter rider has died in an accident in the Devon town of Torquay.

Garry McCarthy, a 41-year-old local man, was riding a 50CC bike when he hit a railway bridge on Avenue Road at about 1725 BST on Sunday, police said.

An ambulance crew attended the scene and the man was taken to Torbay District hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No other vehicles were believed to have been involved in the crash. Police are appealing for witnesses.
