Celebrations to mark shop opening

Shopping

Residents of a Devon village have celebrated the official opening of their only shop.

The village of East Budleigh has been without a shop since December 2005.

The £30,000 needed to open a new community shop has come from county, district and parish councils, local trusts and organisations.

The shop, in the village hall car park, stocks fresh local produce, alongside everyday necessities and remains open seven days a week.

"Our shop is truly owned by the community "
Linda Florey, local resident

It is being managed by local resident Colin Weston, with the help of 40 volunteers from the village.

Linda Florey, chairman of the project management team, said: "This is exactly what the local community needs.

"And with our membership scheme and bonds scheme, our shop is truly owned by the community and run by the community."

The shop is open Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1900, Saturday from 0800 to 1600 and Sunday from 0800 to midday.
