Man held after rooftop incident

A road in north Devon had to be closed while police negotiators persuaded a man who had been throwing tiles from a nearby roof to come down.

Officers were called to an address on Barnstaple Street, Bideford, at 1400 BST on Wednesday.

They found an 18-year-old man armed with a knife. He later moved onto the roof, eventually being helped down by ladder at 2000 BST.

He was arrested for criminal damage and is currently in custody.

Police said the man was "safely brought down after constant dialogue, with assistance from the fire and rescue service".
