Monster hedge is facing the axe

An "out of control" 60ft (18.2m) leylandii hedge is to be turned into wood chippings in Devon.

The offending hedge is scheduled for removal from the Glen Gardens in Honiton next month.

East Devon District Council said it had appointed tree surgeons who would carry out the work after some nesting birds had flown.

The hedge was originally planted by the council to screen the gardens from an adjacent builders' yard.

A council spokesman said it had greatly outgrown the limits set for "good neighbourliness" and was no longer considered to be an asset.
