County's first gay pride event

The first ever Cornish gay Pride festival will get under way in Truro later.

Organisers are billing it as a celebration of diversity for any sexuality, race or religion.

Devon and Cornwall Police are among the many local supporters of the event, and the Gay Police Association flag will be flying at Truro Police Station.

The event starts at 1100 BST and will feature stalls, dancers, singers and comedy acts.

Theatrical theme

There will be a parade with a theatrical theme through Truro City Centre starting at Lemon Quay and ending at Victoria Park.

The coordinator of the Gay Police Association of Devon and Cornwall Police, Simon Hill, said: "We will be flying the GPA flag at Truro police station on Saturday in support of the first Gay Pride Parade through the streets of the city."

Organisers say there has been so much support they want to make it an annual event.

Chairman Christian Diamant said: "At its most basic what Cornwall Pride is celebrating is the fact that Cornwall is a better place because not everyone is white, not everyone is straight and that Cornwall would be a worse place if we were all the same!"
