An investigation is continuing into a fire which completely destroyed a public library and its entire collection of books.

The blaze broke out at Plympton library, on the outskirts of Plymouth on Wednesday. Within a short time the building was reduced to a shell.

Police said it is not yet known whether the fire was started deliberately.

About 25,000 books were lost to the flames, as well as some "irreplaceable" items from a local history archive.

The library building opened in 1964 and was made largely of wood.

As well as housing thousands of books, the building was also used by local clubs and societies.

An extensive local history archive had been moved two years ago to Plymouth's Central Library.

Plymouth City Council said only a "handful" of irreplaceable pamphlets and photographs had been lost.

There are plans to set up temporary library facilities in Plympton as soon as possible.
