Injuries found on body in river

Brutus Bridge

Police say a body recovered from a Devon river by police and firefighters had a number of injuries.

The body was spotted on mudflats at Totnes by a member of the public crossing the New Bridge near Morrisons supermarket at about 0630 BST.

Firefighters had to crawl across boards to reach the man, who is thought to have been in his 40s.

Officers said they are keeping an open mind and forensic examinations have been carried out at the scene.

Supt Chris Singer said they believe the victim was local and his body had a number of injuries.

"We don't yet know whether they are related to the death, whether they were on the person before death or indeed if they have arisen post death," said Supt Singer.

"So we are treating them with a very open mind until the post-mortem examination is complete."
