Man dies after surfing incident

A man has died after getting into trouble while paddling a surf canoe off the north Devon coast.

The man was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital at about 1430 GMT on Wednesday after he became unconscious in the sea near Woolacombe Sands.

The man's wife had called 999 and a helicopter from RAF Chivenor went to Barricane Beach, where a surfer had pulled the man to shore.

The identity of the man has not yet been released.
