Knitted house is a woolly wonder

Alison Murray by the knitted house A knitted house, created by women from around the world, is to go on show in Devon to raise money for charity.

Alison Murray, 45, from Bideford, came up with the idea for the house, which is made up of thousands of squares of wool each measuring 24cm (10in).

The completed 140sq ft (13 sq m) multi-coloured dwelling will go on show at Atlantic Village in Bideford.

The house even has a knitted stove and table and will be surrounded by a knitted garden with woollen flowers.

About 500 women from across the UK, USA, Canada and Spain sent knitted contributions to the house which goes on show on Friday until 20 September.

It is knitted from top to bottom, apart from the wooden door and windows and has 1,000 knitted roof tiles.

Ms Murray hopes the house will raise thousands of pounds for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and North Devon Hospice.

And she hopes to be able to take the house and garden on a UK tour to raise even more cash for the charities.

"It would be lovely to find a permanent home for it, it is too big to store," said Ms Murray. The project has been a family affair, with mother Ann Murray, brother John Murray and uncle John Garrod all lending a hand.

Her first big knitting project was a 30ft Christmas tree which raised £13,000 for charity when it went on show at Atlantic Village last Christmas.

"I want to show people that knitting is not something that granny does," she said.
