Ilfracombe Rugby Club is planning to project a previously-filmed bonfire onto a 22ft wide by 15ft high screen which will hang between the goal posts.
The move comes after youths threw left-over fireworks onto a nearby football club's bonfire four years ago.
The club's president believes it will be the UK's first virtual bonfire.
"We've received a positive feedback, people realise it's a little bit tongue in cheek and a laugh and they could be seeing Britain's first virtual bonfire," said Paul Crabb.

"It's become a hot topic down here, but everyone thinks it's a really quirky idea and they're all looking forward to it. Of course it would be cheaper to build a bonfire, but at least it'll be safer."
He said the virtual bonfire is likely to cost about £300 but there will also be heaters underneath to give the sense of a real fire.
The idea for the bonfire came to Mr Crabb when he was filling out the council's safety forms.
"When you are planning a bonfire you have to do risk assessments. We would have needed four or five more marshals than we have so it was all going to involve a huge amount of effort."
Mr Crabb said people would still get a good deal for their entrance fee money because there would be £2,500 worth of fireworks on show as well.
