Measure to tackle bridge trouble

Bridge in Exeter A new byelaw has been passed in a Devon city to make it an offence to jump from bridges into the city's waterways.

It follows problems in Exeter on the River Exe and also the canal.

The byelaw, which applies to eight bridges in the city, carries a penalty of £500 making it an offence to climb on, jump or dive from the bridges.

The city council introduced it after concerns people were endangering others and themselves by jumping from places like Cricklepit suspension bridge.

'Everyone's safety'

The council said several canoeists and pedalo users have been dive-bombed.

Councillor Peter Edwards said: "Whilst I have no doubt that youngsters were having a lot of fun and were cooling off in the water, we have to consider everyone's safety.

"The council wanted to take action before a child and boat collided and someone got seriously hurt."

Signs have been posted on the bridges covered by the new byelaw.
