Travellers ordered to leave site

Travellers at Churston Travellers who camped on a new park-and-ride site in south Devon have been ordered to leave.

The site off Dartmouth Road in Churston opened on Monday, despite 40 caravans moving there last week.

A county court ruled the travellers had to leave by Thursday morning, although some of them failed to do so.

A Torbay Council spokesman said a court bailiff would be visiting the site on Friday morning to ensure the rest of them left.

Some of the group were believed to have been waiting for one of the travellers who had been ill in hospital and was due to be released later on Thursday.

The new park-and-ride is seen as a crucial part of the regeneration of Brixham by local business leaders who eagerly awaited its opening.

The arrival of the caravans last week failed to delay that, although Torbay Council said it did cause some concern to locals.
