Wild boar herd on the run again

Baby and parent boar at the Woodland Wild Boar Farm - PA More than 30 wild boar are still on the loose in Devon after being released from a farm for the second time.

About 45 animals were freed from Alan Dedames' Woodland Wild Boar Farm near South Molton on Monday. Ten have been recaptured, 35 remain at large.

Animal activists said they "liberated" the animals. About 100 boar were let loose from the farm in December.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are investigating criminal damage at the farm.

"A couple of months ago I had a herd of 102. Now I'm left with 10"

The unnamed activists sent a statement to the Animal Liberation Front confirming that they carried out the attack.

In it, the activists said their action was "dedicated to the boar that Mr Dedames had sent to be slaughtered over the years".

The statement said the activists had "liberated" the boar recaptured after the previous raid on the farm.

The activists said their action had given the boar "a new life of freedom".

Farmer Mr Dedames told BBC News: "They obviously cased the joint and they knew exactly what they were doing."

"The pens with animals in have been destroyed and the empty pens which were repaired after the last time, have had panels cut out them. It's been a fair old destruction."

'Wit's end'

Mr Dedames said since the herd was originally released in December, local police had been very good at checking his property.

"I'm at my wit's end though, because there's not a lot they can do unless they catch them in the act.

"A couple of months ago I had a herd of 102. Now I'm left with 10."

In January, about half the wild boar were recaptured and 22 were shot. The remainder are assumed to be roaming free.
