Five companies have been shortlisted to redevelop an historic part of Plymouth.
Regeneration agency English Partnerships bought the 18-acre South Yard site in Devonport from the Ministry of Defence for £5m in July.
About 500 new homes are planned for the area as well as a healthcare centre, supermarket, shops and offices.
The short-listed developers have until November to submit their plans for the site and the winning firm will be selected by Christmas.
SHORT-LISTED COMPANIES
A high-security wall was built as the Royal Navy dockyard expanded in the early 1960s.
Now it will be demolished in stages as the regeneration of the area, which will take between eight and 10 years to complete, progresses.
Marc Gardiner from the Devonport Regeneration Company said: "This is another key milestone in getting the heart of our community back.
"We are looking forward to selecting a long term partner who will work with us to realise our dreams for the enclave."
