A Derbyshire man has been jailed for biting off the end of a woman's nose in a drunken attack at a family party.
David Wilson, 48, of St James Street, Buxton, was at a party at the Palace Hotel in August 2008 when he attacked 45-year-old Diane Fox.
Derby Crown Court heard that Wilson tipped up a table, grabbed Mrs Fox by the throat and then bit her nose.
He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced to five years in jail.
Judge John Burgess said: "Throughout your life drink has been a problem. All your previous appearances before the courts have been prompted by your drinking too much.
"On a drinking binge, you attended this family party and for no reason anyone can explain you grabbed this woman by the throat and you bit her nose and bit a significant part of it off.
"It's a particularly grave injury and she has already had surgery. She has been psychologically damaged as a result of this. She feels unable even to go out shopping because she fears people are looking at her."
The judge also ordered probation officers to place Wilson on a course to tackle his drink problem.
