Worker loses case against store

A Muslim man who sued supermarket firm Tesco for religious discrimination because he was asked to handle crates of alcohol has lost his case.

Mohamed Ahmed, 32, of Upper Dale Road, Normanton, Derby, worked at the firm's Lichfield depot for eight months.

He claimed that when he started the job he was not told that he would have to transport alcohol - a task he said was against his beliefs.

Mr Ahmed is now considering appealing against the decision.

The Saudi Arabia national, who moved to Derby in 2006, said: "I am thinking about appealing. It's not fair but what can I do? They [Tesco] were not taking into account my religious beliefs. I will consult with solicitors."

Three-day hearing

His work involved transporting goods including alcohol on a fork-lift truck.

Mr Ahmed complained to Tesco but claims he was treated unfairly as a result and left in protest after eight months working for the company.

He said managers victimised him because of his stance.

Tesco said Mr Ahmed was made aware at his induction that he would be handling alcohol, and that every effort was made to find him an alternative role in the warehouse.

The case was heard at a three-day tribunal in Birmingham.
