Custody man died of heart failure

A Derby man who died after being arrested for drink driving, suffered heart failure, an independent investigation has revealed.

Kanwaldip Singh Bains, of Stenson Fields, 38, died at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary on 15 October less than an hour after his arrest.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is routinely asked to look into such cases.

Mr Bains was taken ill in a police car and treated at a police station.

He died later in hospital of heart failure.

His family paid tribute to Mr Bains as an "exceptional father, husband, son, brother and friend".

"I hope that our findings will help to provide Mrs Bains and her family with some of the answers as to what happened on the night Mr Bains sadly died," a Commission spokesman said.
