House flood barriers are offered

Flood victims in Derbyshire are been given the chance to install a plastic barrier to keep as much as two feet (0.6m) of water out of their homes.

South Derbyshire District Council is investing £10,000 to help residents with the cost of the barriers.

Council leader Heather Wheeler said the barriers will cost about £50 each and can be purchased from the council.

People who claim benefit or who are registered disabled will have the shields provided at no cost, she added.

"Sandbags can do an effective job but these flood shields are even better as they can be fitted in a few minutes by the resident to help seal up doors and holes in air bricks at flood level," she said.

Cllr Wheeler said the barrier creates a tight seal and can be adjusted to fit the door.
