A man was seriously injured when he was twice run over by a car containing burglars making their getaway from his house.
Barry Granger, 62, who recently had a triple heart bypass operation, was hit in Blind Lane, Breaston, Derbyshire, as he tried to stop the men.
He is in a serious condition in Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.
Officers have been trying to trace two white men seen driving a red or maroon Renault Megane.
Mr Granger's wife, Pauline, who confronted a burglar inside the house, was not injured.
'Yell of pain'
Roger Twells was walking down the road with Mr Grainger and Mr Grainger's four-year-old grandson when they saw a man running to a car.
Mr Granger tried to grab the keys but the burglar managed to start the car.
Mr Twells said: "It reversed really quickly and I was caught by either the door or the back of the car and thrown into a hedge.
"With the yell of pain that came from Barry, it either caught him really hard or ran right over him."
The car began to move down the lane, then reversed rapidly and hit Mr Granger again, Mr Twells said.
His grandson was unhurt.
The getaway car had been parked with its engine running as the driver waited for his accomplice to return, police said.
The man who fled the house is described as white, about 30, 6ft (1.8m) tall, with a slim build and short dark hair.
He was wearing a dark tracksuit, possibly navy blue and white trainers and was carrying a rucksack over his left shoulder.
The car was found abandoned a short time later near playing fields in the Moorbridge Lane and Peatfield Road area of Stapleford.
