Course to prevent domestic abuse

Police in Derbyshire are working with a women's aid group to help abusive men control their behaviour.

North Derbyshire Women's Aid has set up a course which aims to help men who have abused their partners in the past or who may do so in the future.

The intensive weekend course aims to help men learn techniques to control their tempers.

It is hoped the course will be the first step in developing more in-depth help for abusers.

Sgt Melanie Hagues said: "The programme aims to stop domestic abuse before it starts and prevent situations from getting out of control."

Senior North Derbyshire Women's Aid worker, Alison Higgins, added: "This will provide an opportunity for men to think about their abusive behaviour and the impact this has on their partner and any children."

The course is set to run on 6 and 7 September at Staveley Children's Centre.
