Crete crash man suffers infection

A holidaymaker injured in a crash in Crete could be in hospital for weeks after contracting an infection, his family has said.

Dean Willis, 23, from Derby, was hurt in a moped accident and his family had to raise £8,000 to fly him home.

Now doctors at a Nottingham hospital have said he is suffering from a bug he picked up abroad and this could seriously delay his recovery.

His mother said he was making progress, but he was often in pain.

Mr Willis, who had been working as a DJ in Crete, suffered broken bones and burns in a moped crash on the island.

'Low spirits'

He did not have health insurance, so his friends and family had to raise the money to fly him back for treatment in Nottingham.

Cheryl Yorke said the MRAB (Multi-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii) infection had been the last thing her son needed.

"He could be in hospital for months because he has contracted this bug which means the healing process takes longer," she said.

"He is in very low spirits, some days you walk in and you can see tears rolling down his cheeks.

"There is a psychiatrist that is going to speak to him and I have been advised to get help as well because you relive it every day."
