Upset passenger wants more seats

A Nottinghamshire woman who was injured on a transfer bus at East Midlands Airport is calling for seats for all passengers travelling on them.

Dawn Birkhead, 46, was returning from a 25th wedding anniversary trip to Spain on 12 July when the bus braked suddenly and she was thrown to the floor.

She suffered face injuries and a broken chest bone in the accident.

The airport said the bus was operated by an independent firm and a full internal investigation had started.

Ms Birkhead, who was injured along with 12 other passengers, said she was "very distressed" by the accident.

Apology sent

In a statement, East Midlands Airport said they were taking the incident extremely seriously and were waiting for the outcome of the investigation before deciding on further action.

Airline BMI has extended regrets and apologies to passengers affected by the incident while travelling in a Menzies bus to the terminal.

Mrs Birkhead, from Bakersfield, said: "You don't go on public transport without a seat unless the bus is entirely full and I believe everyone should be able to sit down comfortably.

"Perhaps my injuries wouldn't have been what they are."

Aviation services firm Menzies said customer safety was paramount at all times.

Menzies spokesman John Geddes said: "Safety and security are our two prime concerns and we have built our reputation on these two issues - we will be happy to enter into any discussions to make the buses safer.

"The buses are designed to travel short distances at low speeds but we would be happy to work with any passengers or airport authority on safety."
