New ranger to start work in city

A ranger has been employed in Derby's Cathedral Quarter to help new visitors find their way around the city.

Gabrielle Chesterman, 28, will help people find shops, museums and other sites in the Cathedral Quarter, as well as help local businesses.

The idea behind the ranger scheme is to make the quarter a safer, cleaner place, as more people visit newly-regenerated parts of the city.

Local businessman Jim Stewart said he thought the ranger was a good idea.

"If people are aware there's someone around to help them and point them in the right direction... then it's got to be a big positive... as we're attracting more people into Derby," said Mr Stewart, who runs a sandwich shop in the Market Hall.

Miss Chesterman will be equipped with maps, a mobile phone and personal organiser to help her point people in the right direction.

She will be employed by the not-for-profit Cathedral Quarter Company which aims to promote the area.

There is a similar ranger service in Rugby, where Miss Chesterman was trained.
