Trafalgar ship's log discovered

A ship's log describing the Battle of Trafalgar and Lord Nelson's death has emerged after 200 years.

The document was found in a family home in Leicester and is expected to raise thousands when it is auctioned in Derbyshire later this month.

Auctioneer Charles Hanson said the log was from HMS Belleisle, which took on the French and Spanish.

He said: "There's remarks from really every minute of every hour that day in October 1805."

The log refers to Nelson's famous "England expects" flag signal.

It reads: "Six A.M. Answered the general telegraph signal from Lord Nelson that England expected every man to do his duty...

"The enemy opened fire on the Royal Sovereign. A French ship bore up to us to take us, a ship on each side engaging us and on the starboard bow."
