Underage alcohol sales tested out

Sales of alcohol to underage youngsters have been the target of a new operation in part of Derbyshire.

Police and trading standards officers worked with young people under 18 to carry out test purchases of alcohol.

In total, 14 off-licences in the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire areas were visited. Two failed the tests by selling to the volunteers.

Supt Paul Berry from Chesterfield Police said he was "encouraged" that only two of the 14 off-licences failed.

The test purchases are part of Operation Relentless, a two-month campaign aimed at targeting alcohol-related disorder and domestic violence.

Supt Berry said: "As part of Relentless...this is one of the tactics to help target underage drinking and sales.

"We will work with those premises that have failed to make sure they understand that if they continue to flout the law, firm action will be taken against them," he said.
