Man cycles for meningitis child

A single-leg amputee from Derbyshire has cycled down some of Spain's highest mountains to help a boy who lost his limbs to meningitis.

Eight-year-old Edward Bright from Ripley, contracted meningococcal septicaemia in February 2007.

The strain was so virulent he had to have his legs amputated and both his arms from the elbow.

David Bramall, 49, from Etwall, rode down the Sierra Nevada to raise funds for the Edward Bright appeal.

'Providing a future'

Edward's father Steve said: "All the money's put into a trust for Edward for when he gets older, because obviously he'll want to choose different legs or arms that he needs.

"And he'll need a car adapting and whenever he gets his own place, which hopefully won't be too long, he'll need adaptations doing to that. So really it's to provide him with the same sort of future anybody else would have."

Mr Bramall said he could relate to Edward's resilience, having lost one of his own legs below the knee.

He said: "Approximately eight years ago I was involved in a rather nasty road accident and lost my leg.

"I was determined to make a quick recovery, I wanted to get on with my life. I was out of hospital within a week and a half and I had my first prosthetic leg within a couple of months."

Mr Bramall's journey saw him cycle 50 miles (just over 80 km) over two days down the mountain to sea level.
