Actors present theatre petition

Treasure Island at Derby Playhouse Supporters of financially troubled Derby Playhouse have handed a 13,000-name petition to the city council.

The petition calls for the renewal of grants from Arts Council England to secure the theatre's future.

The Playhouse was put into financial administration in November and shows were cancelled.

Actor Robert Lindsay has backed the theatre, saying it will only thrive with government support.

Cast and crew of the theatre's Treasure Island show walked to the council house after the matinee on Wednesday to show support.

The Arts Council will meet on Thursday to decide whether or not to reinstate the Playhouse's grant. It withheld a £700,000 grant in December because of concerns about its management.

"These theatres cannot survive without funding and the government has to reverse these grave decisions"

Playhouse chief executive Karen Hebden said: "We have been incredibly moved by the level of support we have received - and continue to receive - from the Derby public."

Mr Lindsay said: "The entire theatrical profession, myself included, are genuinely appalled at the Arts Council's measures to cut funds to regional theatres.

"These theatres cannot survive without funding and the government has to reverse these grave decisions."

The business and property of Derby Playhouse is being managed by the joint administrators.

The Christmas production was reinstated after a fresh business plan was introduced by a new consortium.
