Force to deploy cut-out coppers

cardboard cop (right) with Pc Anna Gaskill Derbyshire police have placed 10 life-size cardboard cut-outs of a policewoman in shops across the Peak District to deter shoplifters.

The move follows a similar idea used in the Amber Valley area - although one cut-out was stolen.

Pc Anna Gaskill, who is used as a model for the cut-outs, said the deployment of cardboard police did not mean real-life patrols would be cut back.

"We have plenty of police officers out there. It is just an extra deterrent."

Pc Gaskill said: "They are very high visibility so it is there to deter criminals."

Police have said the blown-up photographs of the officers deter shoplifters and people who drive off without paying for petrol.

The figures cost about £100 to put together and police would like to use more of them.
