Demolition delayed by wire damage

Demolition of Drakelow cooling towers Cooling towers at a power station in Derbyshire have been demolished in a controlled explosion.

The 360-ft towers at Drakelow were scheduled to be knocked down in July but a fault with detonators postponed the event.

There were further delays on Wednesday evening after a rabbit chewed through one of the wires.

As a result, three towers were demolished in one explosion and three more in a second blast.

Local resident Pauline Spratt who witnessed the demolition said: "It was a big 'wow' - absolutely amazing. The noise was very, very loud.

"I was so glad I was here to see it."

A new gas-fired power station is to be built on the site.
