Climbers selected for final stage

Dave Bunting The leader of a team of Army climbers said "one last massive effort" was needed to enable the first Britons to conquer Mount Everest's West Ridge.

Dave Bunting, 38, of Alderwasley, in Derbyshire, is one of the five who will attempt the final stages of the climb.

Sports scientists at Leeds Metropolitan University helped plan the mountaineers' physical training.

Fewer then 20 people have navigated the steep and narrow ridge of rock, exposed to high winds for the entire route.

The summit team want to reach the peak in one push - which Dave Bunting anticipated would be "seven days of hard graft".

The group was encouraged by news of good weather.

"The aim is to put 200% into this next weather window, there's a great chance coming and we're going to put absolutely everything into it," said Warrant Officer Class Two Bunting.
